The Lady Blues prevailed against Emporia State on Wednesday, earning their seventh MIAA championship title. The game jumped into a blowout early on with a seven point advantage by the Blues. Dayna Rodriguez, the 6’2 senior phenomenon from Havana, may have only seen snow for the first time during her 2008-09 season at Washburn, but she makes it rain under the glass every game. Rodriguez played for the Cuban Jr. National Team in Mexico, but there is little recorded history of her playtime. However, she said she has strong memories of playing basketball in Cuba, which is something her parents encouraged her to do after recognizing her skill for the game.

The No. 15 Washburn Lady Blues (14-3, 8-3, second in MIAA) have been a team of streaks this season. After starting the season on a 13-0 run, the Blues dropped three straight games - two home games and a tough 58-57 overtime loss at Pittsburg State (9-9, 7-4, third in MIAA). Following a loss at home to rival Emporia State (17-1, 10-1, first in MIAA) last week, however, the Blues seemed on a mission as they cruised to a 63-55 Saturday night victory against Nebraska-Omaha in Lee Arena.

Five Blues, one WNBA draft pick highlight all-decade team
Under the leadership of coach Ron McHenry, the Lady Blues transformed from a team that had a losing record to a consistent MIAA contender with a national championship on its resume.
After going 13-14 in 2000-01, Washburn finished first or second in the conference standings each of the last nine seasons, including four consecutive MIAA titles from 2003-06 and a win against Seattle Pacific in the 2005 national championship game.
McHenry was recognized by “D2 Bulletin” as national Coach of the Year and MIAA Coach of the Year, while guard Jennifer Harris was named national Player of the Year following the Lady Blues’ first national championship.
Led by Harris in the backcourt, Washburn set an NCAA Division II record with 51 consecutive wins from 2004-06, and overall, the Lady Blues posted a 241-49 record in the 2000s.

RoadRunners lose against St. Louis on MS night
The Topeka RoadRunners may have only picked up two out of the four points this past weekend in a two-game series with the St. Louis Bandits, but none of the players are hanging their head. Putting up a valiant effort on the offensive and defensive side of the game, the RoadRunners earned a split against the Bandits, who now trail Topeka (39-8-5) by four points with a game in hand in the race for the North American Hockey League South Division top spot.

The Washburn Ichabods (15-13, 8-12) are alive and well in Kansas City, Mo. This weekend's softball and baseball games have been cancelled. The Washburn Ichabods were set to open their season this weekend with a Friday-Sunday series against Nebraska-Kearney at Falley Field. The games were canceled because of poor field conditions and forecasted inclement weather. The Ichabods' next scheduled game is 3 p.m. at Falley Field against Rockhurst if weather doesn't affect it.

The Washburn football program inked 18 new players for the 2010 season last Wednesday, Feb. 3. The Bods looked to bulk up an already stellar offense, signing three running backs, a receiver, a tight end and Tyrell Brown, a 6’6, 190-pound quarterback from Topeka West High School. Washburn signed only one offensive lineman in Silver Lake product Tyler Smith, who was an all-state selection his senior season.

While they may have not been the prettiest games of the season for the Topeka RoadRunners, getting a two-game sweep this past weekend had to be a relief. Friday’s game against the Texas Tornado (16-19-3) got off to a difficult start when Scott Deur of Texas fired the puck past Eric Rohrkemper to give the Tornado a 1-0 lead halfway through the first period. But Topeka (31-7-4) would answer less than three minutes later when Alec Hagaman scored an unassisted goal to tie the game. Justin Kovacs, in just his third game since being acquired from the Cedar Rapids Roughriders of the United States Hockey League, fired the puck past Dan Sullivan just a minute later to give the ‘Runners a 2-1 lead at first intermission.

Missouri Western drops Washburn, snaps four-game winning streak
To overcome the misfortunes they suffered early in 2010, all the Ichabods needed was a little Mo. In the middle of a five-game losing streak, momentum wasn’t on their side, Maurice Colter wasn’t on the court and the new year wasn’t going the way WU planned. All of that changed in mid-January when coach Bob Chipman found a lineup that worked and the Bods won four consecutive games, capped off last Wednesday with a 78-62 victory against Northwest Missouri.

Twin sisters from rival schools now together on Washburn’s campus
It’s not every day twin sisters play at rival universities in the same sport and must face one another twice a season. Yet that’s exactly the situation Ashley and Arica Shepard find themselves in today. Although the two women are quite different in their interests, a mutual love for volleyball has come quite naturally for both. So, when Ashley decided to attend Washburn after graduating from Rossville High School, while Arica went to Emporia State, both with the intention of play volleyball, it left each wondering how it’d be to face one another at the college level. The face-off was intensified with both being an outside hitter for their school. Arica had mixed feelings playing her sister in college.

Five Ichabods named to Washburn Review All-Decade team
In the early 1990s, Washburn began a dominating run in the MIAA that included nine conference championships in 15 years and annual spots in the NCAA tournament. By the mid-2000s Bob Chipman and the Ichabods solidified their spot as the MIAA’s premier men’s basketball program, as well as one of the best in the nation.
WU opened the new millennium with four conference titles in five years, including a berth in the national championship in 2000-01. The first season of the decade was also the team’s finest, as the Ichabods won the regular season and postseason conference titles and finished the year ranked No. 5 nationally.

‘Runners drop two straight
The Topeka Roadrunners were close in both games again the St. Louis Bandits this past weekend. But in playing one of the premier teams in the North American Hockey League, close doesn’t always cut it. Friday night’s match, deemed as “College Night,” started rough from the get go with a 2-0 lead early on for the Bandits. The RoadRunners never quite recovered. A strong effort by St. Louis goalie Tyler Bruggeman stole much of the show from that point forward.

Two players with double-doubles for Washburn against UNO
The Washburn Ichabods (10-8, 4-7) strung together their third straight victory Saturday night with a 60-49 win against Nebraska-Omaha (14-4, 7-4, third in MIAA) in Lee Arena. Led by junior forward De'Andre Washington, who had a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds, the Ichabods overcame a bad shooting night and a much more athletic UNO team to get the win. Shooting 22-66 from the field, including 4-20 from the three point line, the Ichabods were blocked nine times and were victims to a demonstrative alley-oop. However, the Bods managed to outrebound the Mavericks 46-41 and actually shot a better percentage from the field, with UNO shooting 17-57.

This Friday night has officially become “College Night” with the Topeka RoadRunners.
There’s sure to be a buzz in the air Friday evening when the 29-6-3 ‘Runners will be taking on the rival St. Louis Bandits at 7:05 p.m. at Landon Arena, with all students receiving 10 percent off ticket prices with a student identification card. While the deal is usually limited to students at Washburn, Friday’s discount includes all local community colleges, technical schools and major universities.
Tiffany Logue, account executive for the RoadRunners, said the night will be “focused around colleges” and the team is trying to offer another avenue of entertainment for students, rather than the usual weekend activities.

It was safe to say the Topeka RoadRunners had the blues after their Friday night match.
Although a furious onslaught came close to tying the game late in Friday night’s contest, the RoadRunners 11 game win streak was snapped in a 3-2 loss to the Springfield Jr. Blues at Landon Arena.
Being outshot 11-2 in the first frame, RoadRunner’s coach Scott Langer was quick to point to a rough first period in being a main problem in the defeat.
“That’s what caught up to us there was our lack of interest in the first period,” Langer said after Friday’s game. “It was probably the worst first period I’ve seen since the team’s been here. You can’t always think you’re going to play a couple periods and win a hockey game.”

After starting with 5-1 record, Bods currently stand at 9-8
The Washburn Ichabods are entering the fall semester on a winning streak, something the Bods haven’t achieved since November.
After starting the season with a narrow loss to Division I school Nevada-Las Vegas, the Bods won every game other November game. Following that stellar month of play, the Bods bottomed out, winning only one game in December and going on a five game losing streak during the winter break, which included a 75-69 overtime loss at home against Missouri Western (11-5, 6-3).

Review staff picks top players from 2000-2009
With a new decade on the way, it's time to announce the best offensive, defensive and special teams players for Washburn from 2000-2009. The staff picked 24 players and a coach to head the Washburn football All-Decade Team, including two Players of the Decade.

For some, the holidays can be a hellacious time of year. This Saturday, at the Kansas Expocentre, it almost certainly will be.
Holiday Hell, a pro boxing and mixed martial arts event at the Expo, will include fighters from Danger-Fire, United Martial Sciences and Heston’s Gladiator Academy. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the fights begin at 7, with tickets starting at $21.
Scott Heston, a former Washburn student, will be the feature MMA bout. He runs Heston’s Gladiator Academy and has trained several fighters competing Saturday, including a woman. Heston teaches a beginners class at the Shawnee North Community Center Mondays and Thursdays from 6-8 p.m., and offers the first two lessons for free.

After being sick for 10 days at the age of 6, Bryce Simons knew something wasn’t right. After testing had finished, it was discovered Simons actually had type-1 diabetes. It wasn’t necessarily hereditary for Simons’ family, but it was a reality for him. And from those early points, it wasn’t always easy to adapt.
