Washburn Tech’s Fall 2010 Community Blood Drive will be held this Friday, Aug. 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Students in the Washburn Tech Healthcare Technology Program have been conducting the drive since 2000. Individuals 16 years and older with a minimum weight of 115 pounds are eligible to donate. Those 16 or 17 must bring a completed parental permission form which is available at the Washburn Tech administrative office.

Registrations are still being accepted for the sixth annual Northeast Kansas Total Percussion Camp scheduled July 20-24 at Washburn University. Open to youth from 7th to 12th grades, the camp provides participants the opportunity to refine their abilities in marching percussion and drumset, with additional clinics presented on tympani, accessories and keyboard percussion.

Washburn University will be welcoming a new piece of art to its campus on Tuesday. The “Lantern Light” sculpture, created by Chinese artist Ye Yushan, will be dedicated June 15 at 11 a.m. in a tented area between Henderson and Benton. The sculpture, which is a gift from Yushan to the city of Topeka, will reside on Washburn’s campus for two years before being moved to its permanent location in downtown Topeka. It commemorates 30 years of diplomatic relations between the United States and China.

Fused glass artist Cassandra Cohen, of Topeka, was selected to receive the People’s Choice Award by visitors at the 18th annual Mulvane Mountain/Plains Art Fair at Washburn University June 5 and 6. Art fair jurors Jane Booth and Ben Ahlvers named Eric Abraham, a porcelain artist from Lucas, Kan., the recipient of the Best of Show Award.

Jonathan Jeffrey Kaspar, a sophomore at Washburn, was killed early Friday morning when his car collided with a semi-trailer on U.S. 75 highway. Kaspar, 20, was a native of Topeka and graduated from Hayden High School in 2008. The accident occurred shortly after midnight near mile marker 115 in Osage County. The highway was closed after the accident.

Twenty-six high school juniors and seniors from throughout Kansas will be participating in the 2010 Kansas Youth Leadership Forum for Students with Disabilities (KSYLF) June 8-12 at Washburn University. The theme for this year’s forum will be “Use Your Difference to Make a Difference.” Participants will learn life is shaped by a variety of experiences, decisions, and people. They will also learn how to build upon their foundation to create a bright future.

The Mulvane Art Museum will be hosting the 18th annual Mountain/Plains Art Fair June 5-6, 2010 on the Washburn University campus. The Art Fair begins at 10 a.m. both days, running until 5 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday. The Art Fair is a fundraising event organized by Friends of the Mulvane Art Museum, with proceeds going to Mulvane’s educational programs for children. The event will display work from 90 artists, as well as music, food and drinks and art activities for children.

As a pacesetter organization, Washburn University led the community as the first donor group to stage a United Way of Greater Topeka campaign for 2010. Washburn’s campaign theme, “Live WUnited” set the tone for the campaign, which ran April 1 through May 7. This year, the Washburn University and Washburn Institute of Technology faculty and staff donated $28,658.30.

The new WUsports.com is now up and running. The athletic department's website redesign was delayed by technical difficulties, as it was originally supposed to launch Thursday, May 27, at 10:15 a.m. However, the site made it's debut Friday morning.

The Honorable Christal Marquardt has been named chairwoman of the Washburn University Board of Regents, effective July 1. Serving as vice chairwoman will be Blanche C. Parks. Marquardt was appointed to the Washburn Board of Regents in 2007 by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius. She is an alumna of Washburn University School of Law, graduating with honors in 1974.

McQuere announces changes to College of Arts and Sciences
The Washburn University College of Arts and Sciences is undergoing several changes this summer. Gordon McQuere, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, announced Friday, May 14, by e-mail that Mo Godman, director of the Master of Liberal Studies program, and Rick Barker, director of the Bachelor of Integrated Studies program, will no longer be serving in these roles.

Festival to span nine days at WU's White Concert Hall
The lineup for the Sunflower Music Festival, June 11-19 at White Concert Hall, has been announced.The nine day concert series, consisting of performances by nationally recognized chamber musicians and students, is open to the public free of cost. All events begin at 7:30 p.m., excluding June 13, when high school students from the Blanche Bryden Institute will be performing at 3 p.m. Early arrival is recommended and doors open an hour prior to the start of the events.

Jim Roth, a member of the Washburn Board of Regents, died Wednesday, May 19, in Wichita. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 23, at Downing & Lahey Mortuary, 6555 E. Central, Wichita. Funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 24, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Andover.
