Tune Squad

This blog will be devoted to discussing music, mainly music that I listen to. It will include reviews, rising bands and interesting lyrics or song structures that I feel are worthy of publishing. If you're looking to have a band mentioned, this is also available by comment. Look out for some interesting jams.

Two great shows in two great days!

7/11/10 9:57 PM

The Ataris are an alternative band that have been around for quite some time now. Noted most for their remake of Don Henley's "The Boys of Summer," which was on their 2003 album So Long Astoria, the band will play at the Boobie Trap Bar in Topeka this Thursday, the 15th of July. Tickets are $10 at the door or $8 in advance. The line-up also includes Gasoline Heart, who will also put on quite a show. The Ataris also plan to record a new album titled, The Graveyard of the Atlantic which is tentatively set for a 2010 or 2011 release. Come out if you're free! Metalcore favorites The Devil Wears Prada will also be making a trip through Northeast Kansas, stopping at the Bottleneck Bar in Lawrence on Friday the 16th. The band is on its Back to the Roots Tour with fellow...

Last November Puts on Strong Show

6/22/10 6:22 PM

Atlanta, Ga. based Last November made an appearance at the Boobie Trap Bar in Topeka this past Saturday the 19th and put on a great performance for the roughly 20 spectators for their show. Putting many of their new songs from their EP "Tug O' War" out for the guests, they rocked the stage with great presence and also gave covers of the many 90's songs, including Harvey Danger's "Flagpole Sitta." Their style of powerpop gave the fans something to clap their hands and stomp their feet, including their songs "Julie" and "Georgia." The music trio of Luke Pilgrim, Taylor Woodruff and Tyler Ayers is one to be reckoned with and they're a band that you may see in a larger market as time progresses, including a possible show at Vans Warped Tour. Check...

The Ghost Inside Returns with "Returners"

6/16/10 5:23 PM

Melodic hardcore never sounded so perfect. The Ghost Inside, with their sophomore effort, follow up after their first release Fury and the Fallen Ones with an even stronger effort on Returners. More polished, more melodic and more passionate, vocalist Jonathan Vigil screams heartfelt and liberating lyrics right down your throat. An attempt to find one song on the album that impresses the ear more than any other is difficult, but the song "The Conflict" speaks highly of open-minded thought and of accepting ideas other than one's own. Each of the 11 songs has its own voice, it's own message. It's an album that hits you quick and hits you hard and an album I'll spin in my CD player more than just once. Something about it leaves a refreshing feeling in you and a feeling of...

Great Shows in the Distant Future

6/9/10 5:59 PM

Anyone from around the northeast Kansas region knows that the biggest attractions  for big name bands are usually Lawrence and Kansas City. With Lawrence only a 30 minute drive from Topeka, a great chance to see shows that caught my interest are in the distant future. On July 13, alternative/indie band Minus the Bear will be headlining a show at the Granada in downtown Lawrence. The openers haven't yet been announced. And just three days later, one of my Metalcore favorites, The Devil Wears Prada, will be putting on a show at the Bottleneck in Lawrence. Openers are more metalcore favorites Miss May I and Your Demise. Look for big things out of these two openers in the coming months if this is your style of music. Small shows of my liking are littered here and there through the rest...
