BLOG: Siren delay bothersome for Topeka residents

Late Sunday night, Shawnee County was under a tornado warning, yet the sirens didn’t sound. A funnel cloud was spotted, yet the sirens didn’t sound. And just like that, the warning was lifted and Topeka was reassured that the danger had passed… then the sirens sounded. While some were inconveniently interrupted from their slumbers by the nearby sirens, others were barely able to hear them. This caused confusion for residents and meteorologists alike. After watching WIBW meteorologist Jeremy Goodwin’s interview with Dave Sterbenz, Shawnee County Emergency Management director, it became apparent to me that our system has serious flaws. Big 12's demise begins with Nebraska

Unless you’ve been living underground the past couple weeks, you’ve undoubtedly heard something about the possibility of realignment between some of the nation’s top conferences. Basically, the idea is that the Pac 10 wants to create a super conference—the equivalent to the Justice League of football—that will contain all of the current Pac 10 teams, plus the Big 12’s South division (excluding Baylor) and Colorado. Why Colorado? Not sure. However, Texas legislature is pushing to get Baylor included in the deal instead of Colorado. Nebraska and Missouri also had been conversing about leaving the Big 12 for the Big Ten, which consists of 11 teams. Go figure. Washburn Review staff blogs to inform, entertain

One of the big features we are looking to add to Washburnreview.org this year is the addition of staff blogs. As online editor-in-chief, my hope is that the staff blogs will both inform our readership about news and events going on around campus and provide a possible source of entertainment. Nowadays, blogging is an important facet in the world of mass media, with the line between blogger and journalist becoming increasingly blurred. Journalists must learn the importance of delivering information in a timely manner, and blogging is a great transitional tool between traditional newsprint and online reporting.
