BLOG: Loughner's attack no reason for political warfare

Two days ago, a man gunned down 19 people in an attack on an Arizona representative, Gabrielle Giffords. The assassination attempt was motivated by a vendetta against the current government, and fueled by the current political norms of accusing opponents of outrageous social and moral violations. Immediately following the initial reports of the shooting, a few politicians were quoted as saying this should serve as a “wake-up call” for the vicious way that political games are played. Many questioned whether this would have happened if American politics were more cordial. Then, the shock that united the country dissipated and the warring political factions once again started blaming each other for the different ideological feuds that may have pushed Jared Loughner into shooting...

Football: Americans and FIFA World Cup 2010

About a week ago, I was chatting with a friend (who will remain unnamed to protect his ignorance) about FIFA and my predictions for the different players and teams in the World Cup. “So this is how women feel when I talk about sports,” he said, implying that n-o-b-o-d-y-c-a-r-e-s. I was saddened. Even sadder is the fact that, while the other ousted teams’ countries will spend sleepless nights, most citizens of the U.S. will merely change the channel. Granted, America doesn’t place a whole lot of emphasis on real football. Children are raised playing American football, basketball, baseball and other sports that focus primarily on hand-eye coordination. This is a good reason for why the American goalies are the star players of the team. Unfortunately, this also... 1 comment
