WSGA under budget crunch

With the end of the Washburn Student Government Association's fiscal year coming up this fall, Kevin Nincehelser, WSGA budget director, is seeing red.

Or at least he soon expects to.

With only $17,000 left in reserve funding and several other accounts under $5,000, Nincehelser is predicting that several accounts WSGA holds will go into the negative before the student activity fee is distributed in the fall.
Last Wednesday the Ichabod golfers finished up the three-day NCAA Division II Central Regional Tournament at the Red Hawk Run Golf Course, shooting a 20-over 884, 13 strokes ahead of second-place Central Missouri.

A majority of Americans, especially those in the Midwest, refuse to watch the NBA because of its overpaid, whiny athletes who commit crimes and don't play the game the way James Naismith intended. Many critics avert their eyes from televised NBA games as if it were a live broadcast of a horse being killed right on the track of the Kentucky Derby.

Following the whirls of a conductor's baton, the Washburn University Wind Ensemble delivered a wide variety of music pieces and afterward received rounds of applause Wednesday night in White Concert Hall.

However, the ensemble was enveloped by mixed feelings of success and sadness, because the hand that waved the baton and has conducted the band for 22 years will leave Washburn and its band.

The latest film created from Marvel's pantheon of superheroes, "Iron Man" follows the exploits of Tony Stark, a millionaire businessman and inventor played by Robert Downey Jr. Long story short, Stark's days are numbered thanks to a chest full of shrapnel from, ironically enough, his own weaponry.

In a time when people rely so heavily on facts and data gained from the Internet, they may be losing the benefits of simply reading for fun.

According to an article published in The New York Times in 2007, a decrease in the number of people who read for pleasure correlates with a lowering of test scores not only in reading but in other subject areas, such as math and science.

With the economy in a full-on nosedive, it's easy to see how everyday items have become luxuries. Perhaps the underlying contributor to the downfall is right around the corner. Gas prices are nearing the $4 mark in Kansas yet again, driving many to speculation of walking, riding the bus or investing in a moped.

French chanteuse Edith Piaf lived a hard-knock life.

Abandoned by her parents, forced to live in a whorehouse, blinded for several years because of an inflammatory illness - and this was all before the age of nine. By the time she was in her teens, Piaf was singing in the streets of Paris to make money.

For some people, the outcome of studying abroad is more friends, improved language skills and deep understanding of another culture. But for others, souvenirs are the best outcome.

The band "Karl and Steve, In Your FACE!" was inspired by Karl Fundenberger and Stephen Mitchell's one-semester study in France.

One important aspect of student organizations is how they work together. Despite this, we at the Review have noticed a disconnect when it comes to campus activities.

It is important for the Washburn Student Government Association to be involved with the planning, funding and execution of student activities, but a more important role for the student government is student advocacy.

Often, finals week can make you reflective on your life, on academics and on the future. Of course, this might just be you staring at your feet because your brain will not function any more. Let's assume the former and proceed.

This year at Washburn has been an interesting one.
